THE DEPARTMENT

Post Graduate and Research Department of English

Established in 1919, the Department of English, National College, is as old as the college and one of the most illustrious faculties in the region. It has numbered among its members some of the most prominent scholars in the field, including Shri.V.Saranathan (1921-1947) who is popularly called as the “Prince among Principals”. It became a full-fledged department offering B.A., English programme in the year 1963 and brought in M.A., English programme in 1979. Responding to the growing need for research in literature and language teaching, the department became a research department offering M.Phil and Ph.D programmes in 2001. The department offers a comprehensive syllabi to cover the entire history of English literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present day and world literatures, along with language studies. Supporting the students to enhance their competence in language through literature, the department serves as an interface for the economically underprivileged to achieve the target language competence through a “Bridge Course”. To maximise the opportunities for employability, regular training sessions are organised for NET/SLET aspirants by the department. The 'National Theatre', founded in 2011, is a conservatory to unwind students’ creativity. It is one of the most sought after departments for research in language, literature and criticism in the region.
