THE DEPARTMENT

About The Department

Economics is the social science that studies economic activity to gain an understanding of the processes that govern the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services in an economy. Economics focuses on the behavior and interactions of economic agents and how economies work. Consistent with this focus, primary textbooks often distinguish between microeconomics and macroeconomics.Microeconomics examines the behavior of basic elements in the economy, including individual agents and markets, their interactions, and the outcomes of interactions. Individual agents may include, for example, households, firms, buyers, and sellers. Macroeconomics analyzes the entire economy (meaning aggregated production, consumption, savings, and investment) and issues affecting it, including unemployment of resources (labor, capital, and land), inflation, economic growth, and the public policies that address these issues (monetary, fiscal, and other policies).

The Department of Economics was started in 1919 with the introduction of B.A. Economics Programme. M.A. Programme was started in 1960. The Department was recognized as the research department in 1975 and M.Phil was started in 1980. Many distinguished professors such as Sri. S. Thothadri Iyengar, Sri. K. A. Neelaganda Sasthri, Sri.M.S. Venkatrama Iyer, Sri. L.S. Parthasarathi, Sri. K.V. Sundaram and Dr. A.N. Rajamani have worked in the Department. More than 90% of the students belong to BC/SC/ST communities. Many alumni of the department occupy decent employment in various Government and Private Agencies.
